New Driver Scheme Launched
West Midlands drivers involved in minor crashes are to be sent for lessons instead of court, under a scheme launched yesterday.
The driver improvement course is a joint initiative run by the police, Birmingham, Walsall and Dudley Councils.
Drivers involved in minor injury or damage only road crashes will be sent on the day-and-a-half course as an alternative to court action.
They will pay £100 to cover costs and their retraining. Police officers will decide whether drivers are to go on the scheme or through the courts.
Inspector Ray Hartshorne said the scheme, launched at Birmingham’s Tally Ho! police centre, aimed to educate rather than punish drivers.
